About

Renée Belliveau is the author of the novels A Sense of Things Beyond and The Sound of Fire, which was named a Quill and Quire book of the year and shortlisted for the 2022 ReLit Novel Award, as well as the memoir Les étoiles à l’aube.

She draws inspiration from her work as an archivist, where she spends her days surrounded by records of the past. In addition to her books, she has written several articles exploring lesser-known aspects of Canadian and regional history.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Mount Allison University, a Master of Arts from the University of Waterloo, and a Master of Information from the University of Toronto. A proud acadienne originally from Shediac, NB, Renée now lives in Dartmouth, NS, with her husband.

We made landfall in Ireland just before Hurricane Amy, and travelled to the west coast to experience it from the other side of the Atlantic. Drenched, and howling with laughter, we tried and failed to fight the gale.

In two weeks, I’ll be taking part in Writing Rumble 2025, an annual fundraiser for the Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia (WFNS).

What a great weekend! I couldn’t have asked for a better way to launch A Sense of Things Beyond, first at @trident_cafe_halifax and then at the annual Word on the Hill at @nimbuspub. Grateful to everyone who came out!

I have several events coming up, and a few more still under wraps!

My father was a strong supporter of the Terry Fox Foundation. He was diagnosed with cancer in his early 30s, and I think he felt a kinship with Terry, who he’d seen running through Shediac when he was in high school.

While Grace Annie Lockhart’s story is perhaps better known, I’ve always found Harriet Starr Stewart, the first woman in Canada to earn a Bachelor of Arts, equally fascinating. Unlike Grace, who completed her Bachelor of Science only a few years after Mount Allison University opened its doors to women in 1872, Harriet, who was only 10 years old at the time, had the benefit of both time and foresight.
